HUMPBACK MOVES
Tail Slap: When you see a whale raise its tail fluke out of the water get ready for several slaps!
Hint: put your camera on video!
Spy Hop: Look for a big head rising out of the water checking out what is happening in the terrestrial world!
Breach: Humpbacks use their tail to launch themselves out of the water, their huge pectoral fins outstretched like wings landing with a huge splash!
Whale entanglements
Whale numbers are making a gradual recovery which is fantastic! However as more whales migrate up and back down the NSW coast each year, we are seeing more and more entanglements in nets and other marine debris.
Unfortunately this problem is not unique to NSW or even Australia. Reports from the US show that 10-20% of Humpback Whales suffer entanglement injuries each year! Whale disentanglement is a difficult and dangerous job!
In NSW, whale rescue falls under the scope of National Parks rangers as well as not-for-profit partner organisations like ORRCA.
ORRCA (Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia)
Underwater Safaris crew are members of ORRCA who's primary focus is the rescue, preservation, conservation and welfare of Whales, Dolphins, Seals and Dugongs in Australian waters. If you’re keen to get involved, ORRCA provides Marine Mammal Rescue Training Workshops which, once complete, qualifies you to become a member of the ORRCA Rescue Team!
For more information about the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) or to sign-up for a training workshop please visit www.orrca.org.au.
If you see a stranded whale, entangled or sick whale or seal in distress please report it as soon as possible to the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service State Duty officer on 02 9895 7128 or ORRCA whale and dolphin rescue on 02 9415 3333 (24 hours hotline).
Sea Shepherd
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is an international, non-profit marine conservation organization that campaigns to defend, conserve and protect the world’s oceans.
From the gentle giants of the sea to its smallest creatures, Sea Shepherd’s mission is to protect all marine life species living in our oceans. Their campaigns have defended whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, penguins, turtles, fish, krill and aquatic birds from poaching, unsustainable fishing, habitat destruction, and exploitive captivity. Sea Shepherd uses direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action on the high seas.
